What are the origins of your name?

Nattljud is Swedish for night sounds - corny, I know, but it comes from the long black metal and goth tradition of using vaguely spooky pseudonyms in online spaces. I’ve gone by this name from the Tumblr days for close to a decade now, originally as my atmospheric landscape photography handle, but since then, it’s been wonderfully applicable as a DJ tag.

What atmosphere do you hope your sets bring?

I generally aim for something kind of dreamy, sparkly, highly danceable, with a pinch of heavy industrial or techno to shake things up a bit. It’s an adventure. A wild ride. Always.

What process do you go through as you prepare a set?

I try to find songs that all sit around similar BPMs, and I set up my cue points in advance, but on top of that, I like to just have a bit of a warm up before playing live, figure out new combinations of songs to transition or blend together, get a feel for the sound I want. In case you were wondering, my favourite BPM is 127.

What song do you never tire of playing?

Keen listeners will note I have a lot of trouble avoiding TR/ST’s Bulbform, or any of Lebanon Hanover’s stompier songs. They’re just so easy to mix at any tempo and always lift the energy in a DJ set.

What have been your highlights djing?

I mostly just love playing relentless goth club bangers, and throwing in some sinister techno in the mix - it’s so much fun seeing people feeling compelled to dance for the entire 90 minutes of synthpop, darkwave and post-punk my sets typically revolve around.

What would your ideal setting for a show be?

An abandoned cathedral! Filled with mist and red glowing lights! Does that exist anywhere? Has anyone actually abandoned a cathedral?

What are you nostalgic for in Perth’s music past?

I think we can all agree when I say I miss The Bakery. My only regret is not seeing Peter Murphy there when he toured last decade.

What are your outfit plans for halloween?

Probably going to dress as 2020 or something
